The "piece cutting" technique for hand-tufted carpets is mainly used to enhance the three-dimensional effect and artistic appeal of patterns. By trimming the edges of the carpet with scissors, shallow groove contour lines similar to relief carvings are formed, making the lines smoother and more layered. This technique is often applied to complex pattern designs; through different cutting methods (such as high-low cuts, "kahua" [a traditional Chinese carpet cutting method for creating textured patterns], etc.), the visual effect is enhanced.
Craft Characteristics
- Enhanced Three-Dimensional Effect: The piece cutting technique creates concave-convex textures by trimming the edges of the pile surface. When combined with the hand-tufting technique, the pattern presents a relief-like texture.
- Optimized Lines: The trimmed lines are smoother and more natural, and can maintain the continuity of pattern edges especially in complex patterns.
- Process Complexity: It requires fine manual trimming after the completion of hand-tufting, which has high requirements for workers' skills. Therefore, the cost is relatively higher.
